Programs and Partners

BECA prepares students to graduate on-time and with a plan, whether they are ready to enter the workforce or go on to college/university. Our many career-connected learning opportunities allow students to explore potential careers, gain professional skills, and develop as leaders.

 
 

CAP is a BECA designed and developed, paid apprentice program both in-school and at off-campus sites intended to develop students’ employability skills in specific areas of interest, and develop the leadership and professional skills necessary for our students to be competitive in their chosen pathway. CAP introduces the formal employment and evaluation process as well as includes cycles of professional learning throughout the experience.  Approximately 80 students participate in CAP each school year during our trimester cycles. 

 

Our program outcomes include:

  • Students develop job skills in specific disciplines 
  • Students develop other professional skills such as writing a resume, interview practice, etc. 
  • Students serve as models and leaders for the student body and larger BECA community 
  • Students gain applicable experience with formal job application process 

 

In-school, our students hold a variety of jobs that are supervised by BECA staff. Student positions include but are not limited to Community School Team, Main Office Assistant, Lab Assistant, ENL Club Ambassador, Technology Assistant, and more!

 

Our off-campus internship sites this year are:

  • Center for Supportive Schools school partners (Bronx Early College Academy, The Melrose School, Grant Avenue Elementary, Teller Avenue Educational Campus)
  • Masa NY non-profit organization
  • Red de Pueblos Trasnacionales non-profit organization
  • NYS Senator Sepulveda’s Office 
  • Koneska Health
  • BxArts Factory arts collective organization
  • Five4Five film company

CRMYA is a multi-year initiative developed in partnership with the NYC Jobs Council and CareerWise New York. Participating schools ensure that students integrate time spent on academics, advanced training, and paid work experience to further develop skills and exposure in their desired career fields.

 

Students earn:

  • High school and debt-free college credit
  • Nationally-recognized industry certificates 
  • Work experience and internships 
  • Networking experience 
  • Technical/ career skills in a variety of fields 

 

Only 1 out of 50 schools in NYC are selected for participation in this program. Through this program, BECA students learned how to use elevator pitches to share their work, effective interview skills, and attended career exploration events. Our 11th grade students are completing apprenticeships at Ernest and Young, the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development, the NYC Mayor's Office of Talent & Workforce Development, and JP Morgan Chase.

 

All 9th and 10th grade students are enrolled in Career Development courses that focus on developing students' professionalism skills. Select 10th grade students are invited to participate in a third career focused course to prepare them for the apprenticeship interviews.

Via a Request for Proposal (RFP) our partner, Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) guarantees summer job placement exclusively for our students in two summer programs.  Students ages of 14 and 15 can participate in career exploration programming, which combines work based challenges, trips, and classroom learning.  Participants are paid a stipend of $700. Youth ages 16 to 21 participate in paid professional summer internships with corporations, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies throughout the City 25 hours per week at the rate of minimum wage.

 

Students are able to:

  • Explore different interests and career pathways
  • Develop productive workplace habits 
  • Engage in learning experiences that strengthen their social, civic, and leadership skills
  • Earn compensation

An extension of summer SYEP via our RFP, WLG offers students ages 16 to 21 an opportunity to strengthen work readiness skills and career exploration via paid internships as well as guidance on post-secondary education and the potential to earn college credit during the school year.

Overgrad is a college and career readiness platform that allows students to explore careers, explore colleges, learn about the admissions process, find personalized college matches, and gain support with scholarships, sending admission documents, and planning next steps after high school graduation.
